Assessments, including functional capacity assessments
The purpose of assessment is to understand your child's strengths and challenges. Assessment is core aspect of occupational therapy, and is usually where we start before intervention.
Sometimes, assessments are needed for specific purposes, such as:
-
Functional Capacity Assessments (FCA), usually for the NDIS.
-
Assessments to support diagnosis, usually for a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist. Bethany is trained in autism assessments, and can accept referrals to complete tools like the ADOS or MIGDAS, alongside a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist for the diagnosis process.
-
Assessments to make recommendations for support at home, school and in the community.
-
Assessments to give you a clear picture of your child.
Assessments are usually followed by a report, if there is a clear reason. If a report is not needed, we will not charge you for one unnecessarily. Reports are written in a clear and easy to understand way, and we can sit down with you and explain the report if that is helpful for you.
Intervention to work towards your goals
Occupational therapy intervention at Play for Life OT is always guided by your goals and your child's interests. We are play-based and child-led, which means therapy sessions are fun and not hard work for kids. Intervention is individualised for each child, but can involve the following:
-
Sensory processing
-
Fine and gross motor skills
-
Play skills
-
Cognitive skills
-
Self-care skills, such as sleep, toileting, dressing
-
Attention & executive function
As a neuro-affirming service, we also work with children in understanding and accepting their diagnosis, and advocating for their individual needs.
Bethany also has extensive experience working with children with physical disability, including assistive technology prescription.

Parent coaching to build your understanding
of your child
As a parent to neurodivergent children, Bethany understands the challenges that parents face in supporting their children. For this reason, Bethany has a special interest in parent coaching.
Parent coaching involves education and coaching in understanding your child, accepting your child, and making changes to daily life to better support your child. Parent coaching can be particularly helpful if your child is unable to attend therapy. Parent coaching is suitable for children of all ages and is an evidence-based and effective service delivery option.
School, Kindy and Childcare consultation
We offer in-house assessments and recommendations for education settings. These services may be funded by bodies such as Kindy Uplift.
These services involve OT observationsin the education setting, during which we will identify areas for growth. We will then provide recommendations in the format that is preferred by your education service.
